About Church of the Saviour in Mazańcowice

An Evangelical Augsburg church from 1930, built as a cemetery chapel, with a tower rebuilt after war damage.

The Church of the Saviour in Mazańcowice is an Evangelical Augsburg church that originated as a cemetery chapel. It belongs to the Evangelical Augsburg parish in Międzyrzecze Górne.

From a cemetery to a church

The Evangelical cemetery in Mazańcowice was founded in 1859 on a plot bought by Józef Fender. The area was later enlarged, which doubled the size of the cemetery, and the plot for the chapel was donated free of charge. The idea of building a chapel appeared before the First World War, but the funds collected were used for war needs.

After the war a building committee was formed. The foundation stone was laid on 15 August 1928, and the chapel was completed and consecrated on 21 April 1930. On that occasion three services were held, attended by 4,000 worshippers.

Destruction and rebuilding of the tower

During the Second World War the tower was destroyed. The first post-war service took place on 21 May 1945, and in 1948 it was decided to rebuild. Work started in 1949, and the construction was carried out free of charge by members of the congregation. The tower was rebuilt, the church was plastered and the interior was painted. The tower underwent a major renovation in 1994, and a new roof was put on in 1999.
