About Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Juszczyna

A wooden parish church from 1922-1927 on the Wooden Architecture Route, whose dedication is linked to the flood of 1908.

The wooden Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Juszczyna was built in 1922-1927 and belongs to the Wooden Architecture Route of the Silesian Voivodeship. Its dedication is linked to the night flood of 16 July 1908, in which 21 inhabitants of the village died.

Why the church is dedicated to the Visitation

After a cloudburst, the swollen water of the Juszczynka stream caused the deaths of 21 people. The inhabitants wanted the Mother of God to visit them and protect them from disasters, hence the dedication of the church. The building committee was formed in 1922, and the church was built to a design by Stanisław Moskalski, a carpenter from Żywiec. A more expensive design by Wacław Krzyżanowski of Kraków was rejected.

The building and the interior

The church stands on a stone foundation, has a log construction and is clad in boards outside and inside. The chancel, with a three-sided end, is small compared with the wider nave. On the south side a post-and-beam tower with a spire and a metal cross is attached, with a porch in front of it. The double-ridge roof is covered with copper.

The interior is covered by a barrel vault decorated with carved carline-thistle motifs (dziewięciosił). The Neo-Gothic furnishings include a wooden high altar with a painting of the Visitation by Bem of Bielsko and figures of Saints Peter and Paul from the workshop of the sculptor Czulak of Buczkowice. The font was made by the local carpenters Karol Kaleta and Władysław Polak. Under the choir hangs a Baroque polychrome crucifix, and the stained glass in the windows refers to the figure of Christ on the left of the chancel and Mary on the right.
