Deep Fryderyk Adit

Tarnowskie Góry
About Deep Fryderyk Adit

A seventeen-kilometre drainage adit from 1821-1834 with a Neoclassical portal in Zbrosławice.

The Deep “Fryderyk” Adit is the longest, at seventeen kilometres, and the deepest-lying adit in the history of Tarnowskie Góry mining. It was driven in 1821-1834 to drain the underground workings of the ore mines in the Tarnowskie Góry area. It is listed in the heritage register.

How the drainage works

Since its opening, the adit has carried water away from the whole underground area by gravity. The water flows through the Roznos, an artificial channel 1,400 metres long dug in 1821, to the Drama river. The deepest shaft on the main section of the adit, “Pomoc Szczęściu”, completed in 1832, is 67 metres deep.

The portal in Zbrosławice

The mouth of the adit is decorated with a masonry portal of sandstone blocks in the Neoclassical style, adorned with the date the driving began, 1821, and the miners' emblem of the hammer and iron. It is in Zbrosławice, on Wolności Street, and is called the Miners' Gate. In 2008 a sinkhole formed at the mouth, which was removed by the end of 2019. The portal was renovated in 2019-2020, and the work was carried out by specialists from the Coal Mining Museum in Zabrze. As part of Industriada, guided walking tours to the mouth portal were organised, leading from the “Sylwester” shaft past the ruins of the “Adam” shaft.

Practical information

  • The portal is in Zbrosławice, on Wolności Street; the adit itself runs underground.
  • The sources do not give rules for entering the adit; the underground route in Tarnowskie Góry is organised by the Silver Mine in Tarnowskie Góry, and current information is on its website.
