About Directorate of the Donnersmarck Mines and Steelworks in Świętochłowice

Brick building of the Donnersmarck mines and steelworks directorate from 1897 in the Northern Neo-Renaissance style, today a residential building.

The former directorate of the Donnersmarck mines and steelworks is a brick building from 1897 at ul. Katowicka 30 in the centre of Świętochłowice, near the Evangelical Augsburg church. Today it is a residential building.

Seat of an industrial empire

The building was erected by the Donnersmarck family, who in 1826-1828 bought land in the villages of Świętochłowice and Chropaczów and the Lipiny farm, and then developed numerous investments here. The building housed the offices of the family's mines and steelworks directorate, moved here from the 1859 building in Piaśniki. The location was chosen because of the village's position between the Donnersmarck works and the main railway line linking Berlin with Wrocław. The date 1897 appears on the facade.

Architecture

The building was created in the Northern Neo-Renaissance style. It is built of brick, faced on the outside with clinker brick, and the architectural details are made of sandstone. Decorated, among other things, are the doors and wall anchors, and a rounded tower projects from the facade. The front faces the Evangelical church. Old trees grow in the area, including a plane tree and a mulberry.

After 1945

In 1951 the building was taken over by the state treasury, in 1958 the offices were converted into flats, and until 1993 it was used by the Polska mine. The building is in poor technical condition, and it is entered in the municipal register of monuments of Świętochłowice.
