Edukatorium Juliusz in Rybnik: an interactive exhibition on medicine and pharmacy in a hospital from 1869.
Edukatorium Juliusz is housed in a former hospital on ulica Klasztorna in Rybnik. Today it is a municipal cultural institution with an interactive permanent exhibition, "Medicine and Pharmacy", prepared for children and adults.
It was a hospital known as the Juliuskrankenhaus, built in 1868-1869. The idea of building it was put forward by the German doctor Julius Roger, who worked in Upper Silesia and died in 1865, before the project was completed. The hospital was financed by the prince and the local community, and it was named in honour of the originator of the idea.
The "Medicine and Pharmacy" exhibition makes use of the former hospital wards. Individual medical specialities, such as ophthalmology, orthopaedics and surgery, are presented at interactive stations. The institution presents itself as a place where science and history meet, and the historic building is surrounded by greenery. The website offers language versions: Polish, English, Czech, Ukrainian and German.
It is about half a kilometre from here to the Museum in Rybnik and less than a kilometre to the Basilica of St Anthony.
