A granite erratic boulder weighing 42.5 tonnes on Wolności Square in Racibórz, a natural monument since 1960.
The erratic boulder on Wolności Square in Racibórz is a block of granite carried by a glacier in the Ice Age. It is regarded as the largest boulder in the Racibórz Basin and the largest monument boulder in the Silesian Voivodeship and in the whole of Silesia.
The boulder is 3.25 m long and 2.25 m high, weighs 42.5 tonnes and has a volume of 16.5 m³. It is made of granite with red feldspar and quartz. It comes from Scandinavia and arrived in this area during the San II glaciation.
It was discovered in 1927 in a sand pit in Wojnowice and fully uncovered in 1929. It was brought to Racibórz in 1934 on a platform pulled by two steam traction engines. It was set in place on 6 June 1934, on the site of the town's first public fountain. The authorities of the time made it a monument of the National Socialist movement and surrounded it with a low wall carrying plaques with the names of its activists. The wall was removed in 1945.
Since 1960 the boulder has had the status of an inanimate natural monument, and in 2005 the voivode of Silesia designated it a natural monument again. Two tourist trails pass next to it: the yellow Polish Minority Schools Trail and the red Polish Hussars Trail.
