ul. Parkowa 25; 41-500 Chorzów, Chorzów
About Evangelical Lutheran Church from Bytom-Bobrek

Wooden Evangelical Lutheran church from 1932, moved from Bytom-Bobrek to the Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park in Chorzów.

The wooden Evangelical Lutheran church from Bytom-Bobrek now stands in the grounds of the Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park in Chorzów. It was built in 1932 as a branch church of the Evangelical Lutheran parish in Bytom-Miechowice, and after a fire it was moved to the open-air museum.

Construction and furnishings

The church was built on a plot donated by the Bobrek Steelworks and consecrated on 29 June 1932. The design was made by the architectural studio of Kurt Nietzsche. The church was built from prefabricated elements; the firm Christoph und Unmack built in the same way a church in Zabrze-Mikulczyce and a geophysical observatory in Racibórz in Upper Silesia. The furnishings were funded by Evangelical parishes: the pulpit from Bytom, the font from Zabrze, four chandeliers from Gliwice, and the communion vessels from Wrocław. The altar and the cross were funded by the Diaconate Institutions “Ostoja Pokoju”, and the steelworks donated a carpet.

Fire and relocation

In July 2014 the roof with the turret was destroyed by fire. In 2015 the church was dismantled and moved to the Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park, and in 2017 it was put into use. After the move it was entered in the museum inventory. The building is also entered in the heritage register (A/397/12 of 31 December 2012) and lies on the Wooden Architecture Route of the Silesian Voivodeship.

Architecture

The structure is made of layered wooden modules on a brick foundation. The church is oriented, built on a rectangular plan with the entrance from the west. It has a gabled roof on glued laminated timber trusses, and in the facade a turret with a pyramidal roof topped with a cross. The interior has a single nave, with a music gallery at the west end, and the windows are pointed-arch.
