About Fryderyk Chopin Park in Gliwice

A Gliwice park from the second half of the 19th century with a Chopin monument, lions by Schadow, a natural monument and the neighbouring palm house.

Fryderyk Chopin Park is a city park in the Gliwice district of Śródmieście, laid out around 1880 between the Kłodnica river and the Kłodnica Canal. Today it covers just under six hectares, and old oaks, maples, poplars, limes and horse chestnuts grow in it, among them a natural monument.

How the park came about

The park was laid out around 1880, and in 1900 it was extended and the Gardener's House (Domek Ogrodnika) was built. The first fountain was built in 1901. In the 19th century the park covered eight hectares; today its area is about 5.87 hectares.

After the destruction of 1945 the park was reopened in 1948. In 1995-1996 an inventory of the greenery was carried out.

Trees and the natural monument

One of the trees is a pedunculate oak with a trunk circumference of 428 centimetres and an age of about 250 years, designated a natural monument. Apart from native species, exotic plants also grow in the park.

Monuments and sculptures

Several sculptures and monuments stand in the park. The recumbent lions were made to a design by Johann Gottfried Schadow, and the sleeping lion was unveiled in 1849.

The monument to Fryderyk Chopin was unveiled on 16 June 1949, and the park took its name from its patron. In 2001 a monument to the victims of wars and totalitarianism, by Krzysztof Nitsch, was erected here.

The palm house by the park

Next to the park stands the City Palm House, built in 1880 with the first pavilions and extended in August 1925.
