Goethe Manor House in Tarnowskie Góry

Górnicza 7, Tarnowskie Góry
About Goethe Manor House in Tarnowskie Góry

A single-storey manor house from the mid-18th century on Górnicza Street, named after Goethe's stay in 1790, today with a restaurant and the PTTK office.

The Goethe Manor House stands on Górnicza Street in Tarnowskie Góry, a few dozen metres from the market square. It is a single-storey brick building from the mid-18th century, named after the visit of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in September 1790.

History of the manor house

The founder and builder are not known. The house served as a burgher's or nobleman's residence, and in the 19th century it was extended and rebuilt. Goethe, then a privy councillor at the court in Weimar, spent two days in the town and visited the “Fryderyk” mine, where a few years earlier one of the first steam engines on the continent had been installed. His entry in the mine's commemorative book is dated 4 September 1790. In 1821 Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz stayed here.

After the Second World War the building fell into ruin. It was entered in the heritage register in 1966, and in 1985 it was taken over by the Tarnowskie Góry branch of PTTK “Ziemi Tarnogórskiej”, which carried out a general renovation until 1990.

What it looks like

The manor house has the plan of an elongated rectangle, a six-axis front façade and a two-axis dormer with a round window in the gable. The roof is a hipped roof with dormer windows. Inside, beamed ceilings survive, and in the hall a staircase leads to the attic. In front of the building stands a monument in the form of an inkwell, referring to the poets who stayed here.

Today

The attic houses the seat of the PTTK branch, and on the ground floor there is a restaurant with mementoes of Silesian and Austro-Hungarian tradition. Vernissages, photography exhibitions and small concerts are also held here. Together with the Gwarków Square and the Museum in Tarnowskie Góry it is a good stop on a walk around the old town, and the route to the Royal Fryderyk Mine lets you follow Goethe's trail.
