Sosnowiec Grenadierów 1B, Sosnowiec
About “Juliusz” Mine Complex

A former coal mine in Porąbka, Sosnowiec, built from 1902, with extraction from 1914 and buildings covered by the heritage register.

The “Juliusz” Mine Complex in Sosnowiec is a former hard coal mine from the early 20th century, whose buildings are entered in the heritage register. It stands on Grenadierów Street in the Porąbka district.

History of the mine

Construction of the “Juliusz” mine in Porąbka began in 1902, and extraction started in 1914 after the sinking of the “Juliusz” and “Karol” shafts. The heritage register dates the complex to 1909-1914. In 1935-1938 the mine was joined by an underground working to the neighbouring “Kazimierz” mine, creating the Kazimierz-Juliusz plant made up of two units, each with its own extraction and processing complex. In 1991-1997 the “Juliusz” unit was closed down, and the whole mine stopped extracting coal in 2015.

What the complex consists of

The heritage register lists about ten structures belonging to the complex: two winding towers, a boiler house, a sorting plant, a carpentry workshop, a transformer station and a turbine building joined to a storehouse. Some of these buildings are recorded as no longer existing, so what has survived on the ground has to be checked on site. The complex does not yet have a description on the zabytek.pl portal, and only a white record card is available.
