Parish church from 1937-1939 with a mosaic of St Anne in the chancel, made in Munich at the turn of 1939 and 1940.
The Church of St Anne in Babice is a brick church from 1937-1939, known above all for the mosaic with an image of the patron saint in the chancel. It stands in a village on the edge of the Rybnik Plateau, in the Racibórz land.
Plans to build the church appeared in the 1920s, but ended with documentation. The construction contract was signed on 18 November 1937, and on 30 May 1939 the church was consecrated by Bishop Walenty Wojciech. During the war the church suffered damage and was rebuilt in 1945-1946. An independent parish was created in Babice on 29 September 1980; earlier the village had belonged to the parish in Racibórz-Markowice.
The church is brick, plastered and single-nave, with a chancel closed in a straight line. The four-sided tower has five storeys and a pyramidal roof, and the belfry storey is decorated with a cornice. Above the main entrance is a round window. The interior furnishings are modern. The stained glass was funded and installed in 1979-1986, and in 1991-1996 the church was renovated, with conservation covering, among other things, the Stations of the Cross, the side altars, the mosaic and the polychrome painting.
The mosaic occupies the upper half of the front wall of the chancel. It was made at the turn of 1939 and 1940 by the Munich firm Mayer'sche Hofkunstanstalt. The disc of the mosaic has a diameter of 270 cm, and 420 cm together with the rays. In 1992 conservators from Kraków carried out a thorough renovation of it: about 800 pieces of gold tesserae were replaced and losses in the coloured tesserae were filled in.
The organ was built in 1966 by Dominik Biernacki; the instrument had six stops and replaced a harmonium. In 2011-2012 it was rebuilt to a design by Prof. Julian Gembalski, with nine new stops added, so that it now has fifteen, two manuals and a pedal.
