Neoclassical garden villa from 1875-1876, since 1992 the home of the “Marchołt” creative club.
The Kramsta Villa at Warszawska 37 in Katowice is a neoclassical garden villa from 1875-1876, entered in the heritage register. Since 1992 it has housed the “Marchołt” creative club.
The villa was built for the family of Gustav von Kramsta, an industrialist and landowner. The design, dating from 1874, was by Julius Haase. The single-storey building stands in a garden and has a covered carriage drive. In 1906 it was acquired by the merchant Siegfried Silberstein, and during the war the occupying authorities set up a German club in it.
After the war the villa hosted various institutions, and in 1955 it was assigned to the Creative Work Club. The rebuilding in 1958-1959 was designed by Tadeusz Gierula: a hall for 100 people and the “Piwniczka” restaurant in the cellar were added, and the exterior was altered. The club opened in February 1959. In 1962-1964 the building housed the editorial office of the fortnightly “Poglądy”, and since 1992 it has been home to the “Marchołt” Club of Independent Creative Associations. The building is currently being renovated.
The Silesian Theatre and the Silesian Museum are a few minutes' walk from here.
