Lutheran Church in Goleszów

Spółdzielcza 9A, Goleszów
About Lutheran Church in Goleszów

A Neo-Romanesque Evangelical-Augsburg church in Goleszów with a tower from 1850 and a painting of the Last Supper from 1857.

The Evangelical church in Goleszów in Cieszyn Silesia belongs to the Evangelical-Augsburg parish. It is entered in the heritage register, and its present shape comes from the extension of 1877, after which the older tower was kept.

From a wooden chapel to the extension

The Protestants of Goleszów built their first modest wooden church in 1785. In 1793 construction of a brick church began. The Duke of Cieszyn, Albert, with his wife Maria Christina, donated building timber, and donations were collected even among Protestants in Upper Silesia. The construction, which dragged on for lack of funds, was probably completed in 1805-1808. In 1850 the foundation stone was laid for the tower, in 1851 it was blessed, and the clock was installed in 1853.

An earthquake in February 1858 cracked the walls of the church and the parsonage, which hastened the decision to extend it. In 1877 the old body was pulled down and a new church was built onto the surviving tower, and it was consecrated in 1878 together with a new organ.

Interior

The church is Neo-Romanesque, with a rectangular three-aisled body and a narrow chancel closed on three sides, lower than the main nave. At the west stands a tower with staircases on both sides, and above the side aisles run two-storey wooden galleries. In the main nave hang crystal chandeliers from the first half of the 19th century, and on the altar is a painting of the Last Supper painted in 1857 by Franciszek Mainhalt of Skoczów.
