About Manor Complex in Dąbrówka Mała

A historic complex of the former Tiele-Winckler estate farm in Dąbrówka Mała, with a manor house, a farm building and an avenue of chestnut trees.

The manor complex on Żyzna Street in Dąbrówka Mała is a remnant of the estate farm of the Tiele-Winckler family, a historic complex from the second half of the 19th century. It is one of the oldest groups of buildings in present-day Katowice: on the eastern elevation of the former farm there is an inscription with the year 1853.

From the history of the farm

An estate farm with a manor probably existed here as early as the 15th century, as suggested by archaeological research, and a settlement developed around it. The present complex is linked to the takeover of the estate by the Winckler family, later Tiele-Winckler, from the Mieroszewski family, who bought Dąbrówka Mała from the Kamieński family in 1824. The farm was not the family's residence but the seat of the manager of their estate.

In the time of People's Poland garages and warehouses were housed here, later a State Agricultural Farm. Around 1965, because of its poor technical condition, the former brick octagonal watchtower, in which a bell calling people to work used to hang, was demolished. The complex was entered in the heritage register on 30 December 1994. The manor remained in the register because the Chief Conservator of Monuments did not agree to its removal when the city considered demolition.

What the complex consists of

The complex includes the manor house, a farm building, a garden and two avenues of chestnut trees. The manor is single-storey, built of plastered brick, on a rectangular plan, with a gable roof and an entrance in the middle of a five-bay façade. Today it is a residential building. The farm buildings were built on an E-shaped plan, a sandstone structure of two storeys with an attic, in which service premises operate today. One of the avenues consists of 28 chestnut trees with trunk circumferences reaching 300 centimetres, and around the buildings remnants of the former park have survived.

Nearby

About 1.7 kilometres from here is the Walcownia - Zinc Metallurgy Museum, showing the industrial heritage of this part of Katowice.
