About Mermaid Monument in Bielsko-Biała

A fountain monument with a mermaid from 1954 by Ryszard Sroczyński, modelled on the Warsaw Mermaid.

The Mermaid Monument in Bielsko-Biała is a fountain with a sculpture of a mermaid, modelled on the Warsaw monument. It stands in the city centre, on a square by 3 Maja Street, near the Pasaż Schodowy, the Dom Techniki and the Prezydent hotel.

Why Bielsko has Warsaw's Mermaid

The author is Ryszard Sroczyński, and the sculpture was made in 1954. It was funded by the Social Fund for the Reconstruction of Warsaw as thanks to the residents of Bielsko-Biała for their contribution to rebuilding the capital. The form closely resembles the original Warsaw monument.

Relocation

During the renovation of the Pasaż Schodowy in 2007-2008 the monument was restored and moved a few metres to show it off better. Right next to it stands the Castle of the Sułkowski Princes.
