Regional museum in Zabrze with departments of culture, art, history, naive art and sport.
The Municipal Museum in Zabrze is a regional museum at ul. 3 Maja 6, established on 3 October 1935. Its beginning was the municipal regional room Städtische Heimatstube Hindenburg, that is of today's Zabrze.
After the war the institution changed its organisation several times and grew into a museum with several departments. In 2006 an inspection of the building forced the closure of its long-time seat at pl. Krakowski 9 and the move of its activities to temporary premises.
The museum has five departments. The culture department documents the life of the urban population of Upper Silesia, and its collections include textiles, household equipment and about 30 Judaica items. The art department shows local work and works by Polish masters, including Leon Wyczółkowski. The non-professional art department has one of the most important collections of naive art in the region. The history department, the largest by number of items, tells the story of Zabrze's industry and municipal organisations. The sport department was established in 2016 and collects pre-war sports memorabilia. The permanent exhibition is “From the History of the Town”, covering education, religious life, culture and the development of industry.
From the museum it is a short distance to the Water Tower in Zabrze (under a kilometre) and the Guido Mine (1.6 km).
