The municipal water tower on ulica Oświęcimska in Bytom is a reinforced-concrete structure in the Modernist style, 44.3 metres high. It has been listed in the heritage register since 2016.

Construction

The first design, from 1931, was prepared by the Zabrze firm Beton- und Monierbau AG and was later simplified. The design that was built was drawn up by the engineer Wieczorek of the firm Kaller & Stachnik, which also ran the construction. Work began in June 1934, and the tower was put into use on 1 February 1936.

Structure

The tower is monolithic and weighs about 3000 tonnes. The cylindrical tank, with a capacity of 1000 cubic metres, is 14 metres in diameter and is close to the Intze type. It is covered by a dome with a lantern and a steel flagpole. The columns are set out on a nine-sided plan.

Today

The tower was taken out of service in the 1970s. In 2015 it was renovated and painted after damage to the concrete and corrosion of the steel had been found. It now serves as a support structure for telecommunications antennas.
