About Museum of the Silesian Press in Pszczyna

A museum in a historic townhouse with printing machines, a linotype and the newspapers of Korfanty.

The Wojciech Korfanty Museum of the Silesian Press is housed in a townhouse from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries at ul. Piastowska 26 in Pszczyna, the town's main pedestrian street. According to the museum's website it is the only such institution in Poland and one of more than thirty sites on the Industrial Monuments Route.

Where the opening date comes from

The museum opened on 5 July 1985, on the 140th anniversary of the publication of the first Polish newspaper in Upper Silesia, the “Polish Weekly Devoted to Peasants”, which appeared in Pszczyna in 1845-1846. The initiator was the Society of Friends of the Pszczyna Land, and the first curator, Aleksander Spyra, saved the ruined townhouse from demolition. The museum has borne the name of Wojciech Korfanty since 1990.

Collections

The exhibits show the old printing technique: printing machines, bookbinding equipment and a linotype. There are also newspapers published by Wojciech Korfanty, Stanisław Ligoń and Karol Miarka. At the museum operates the Printing Workshop, founded in 1982 as a printing house attached to the museum.

The Telemann Room

On the upper floor is a room commemorating the stay of Georg Philipp Telemann at the court of the princes of Pszczyna in 1705-1709. It contains instruments from Upper Silesia, among them a positive organ from the wooden church of St Hedwig in Pszczyna, and the room also serves as a concert hall seating about 40 people.

Nearby

The Market Square is 200 metres away, and the open-air museum, the Pszczyna Village Farmstead, about 300 metres. Close by is also Pszczyna Castle.
