A university museum from 1961 with more than 25,000 specimens of minerals, ores, rocks and fossils; admission is free.
The Museum of Deposit Geology of the Silesian University of Technology has operated since 1961 at the Faculty of Mining and Geology at ul. Akademicka 2 in Gliwice. It is one of the largest scientific and teaching institutions of this kind in Upper Silesia, and admission is free.
The collection holds more than 25,000 specimens: useful minerals from all over the world, as well as minerals, rocks and fossils. The collections come mainly from the municipal museums of Upper Silesia and Cieszyn Silesia, and also from the university's staff, graduates and students. The museum supports the teaching of geological subjects and popularises the earth sciences among school pupils and the general public.
The oldest collection consists of rocks, minerals and ores gathered by Father Leopold Jan Szersznik, first made available in 1802 in Cieszyn. The museum's first exhibition was shown in 1961 in three rooms, in 71 display cases. In 1985 the institution was named after Czesław Poborski, its initiator and first head.
