A Classicist Habsburg palace from 1871-1885, extended until 1911, next to the castle park.
The New Castle in Żywiec, also called the Habsburg Palace, is a brick palace built in 1871-1885 on the orders of Archduke Albrecht to a design by Karol Pietschka. It lies in Żywiec on Zamkowa Street.
The palace is Classicist and two-storey, and after it was built it was extended several times. In 1893-1895 a wing with a glazed roof was added, with bedrooms and guest rooms. Later a pavilion was added with a ballroom called the Hall of Mirrors, measuring 10.5 by 18 metres. The last extension, in 1911, gave a three-axis projection with balconies and a tympanum with the Habsburg coat of arms. The interiors were arranged by the Kraków artists Tadeusz Stryjeński and Franciszek Mączyński, and Karol Stefan gathered here a collection of paintings by Polish and European painters, in which Wojciech Kossak, among others, worked. After the war the palace housed a forestry school.
Nearby are the castle park and the Chinese House, and a little further on the co-cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Żywiec Brewery Museum.
