An obelisk in Kończyce Wielkie, the resting place of about 130 victims of Nazi crimes.
The obelisk in Kończyce Wielkie on Kościelna Street is the resting place of about 130 victims of Nazi crimes from 1939-1945. It commemorates prisoners murdered in the labour camp in Zebrzydowice.
About 130 people died in the camp. They were mainly Jews from Western Europe, including prisoners from the Netherlands. Detailed figures and names are lacking, so the data are worth checking against studies by museums and the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN).
The obelisk was put up by Antoni Opioł, a former prisoner of the Dachau, Gusen and Mauthausen camps and headmaster of the school in Kończyce, and Milorad Miletić. The inscription reads: "Resting place of about 130 victims of Nazi crimes in 1939-1945. From their suffering and blood comes our freedom. Honour to their memory". A separate stone with a plaque stands on the site of the former camp in Zebrzydowice.
