Panewniki Calvary

Panewnicka 76; 40-760 Katowice, Katowice
About Panewniki Calvary

A complex of Passion and Marian chapels from 1909 in the park by the Franciscan monastery in Katowice-Panewniki.

The Panewniki Calvary is a complex of Passion and Marian chapels in a park of about 8 hectares, by the Franciscan monastery in the Katowice district of Ligota-Panewniki. The beginning of the calvary is taken to be 1909, when the sites of the future chapels were marked with wooden posts bearing pictures.

How it came about

The basilica was completed in 1908, and stones from the Holy Land were placed in 1911. The stations were blessed on 16 July 1911 by Father Wilhelm Rogosz, and the metal figures of Christ and the two thieves were put in place on 4 April 1912. In 1936 a competition for the design of the chapels was decided, won by the Lwów architects Jan Krug and Tadeusz Brzoza. The war interrupted the work, and the Stations of the Cross chapels were completed in 1953. The rosary chapels were built in the 1950s and 1960s.

The Way of the Cross and the rosary chapels

The Way of the Cross consists of station chapels completed between 1938 and 1953. Stations XI, XII and XIII are in the Crucifixion chapel, 12 metres in diameter, blessed on 5 August 1951. The fifteen rosary chapels are divided into joyful, sorrowful and glorious, and they were blessed in 1957, 1959 and 1963 respectively.

The park by the Kłodnica

The Kłodnica flows through the calvary grounds, and four footbridges cross it. The park has tree stands more than a hundred years old: maples, sycamores, limes, oaks, birches and other species. In the western part stands a pedunculate oak with a girth of 3.55 metres, and in 2002-2005 about 400 trees were added. The oldest place of worship is the Lourdes grotto, a copy from 1905.

Nearby

Right next to it stands the Basilica of St Louis the King and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and it is a little over a kilometre to Zadole Park.
