Środula Park

Sosnowiec
About Środula Park

City park in Sosnowiec on a hillside, with an artificial ski slope, an outdoor gym and a children's playground garden.

Środula Park is a city park in Sosnowiec, spread over a hillside at the final stretch of ul. 3 Maja. The landscaped part covers 10.038 ha, and together with the adjoining tree plantings the park reaches about 45 ha. It occupies the land between the Środula estate, the Zagórze district and ul. gen. Zaruskiego.

How the park came about

Construction of the park began in 1991 on wasteland left by the fields of a disbanded state farm. The trees planted then form its basis today, and all the vegetation was planted in stages after 1991. Later the paths were tidied, a playground was built and the Florek pond was regulated; it was drained in 2017.

The greatest change was the heaping up of an artificial slope from about a million cubic metres of mining waste. Work was completed at the turn of 2002 and 2003. The slope is 50 m high from its base, and its broad summit is a viewpoint over the area. In 2010 the city took over the slope, and it is managed by MOSiR in Sosnowiec. You will find more about the slope itself in the description of the Środula Ski Slope.

What is in the park

The park has walking and cycling paths, an outdoor gym, a street workout zone, a fenced dog run of 2,340 m², a wooden playground and a children's playground garden with three zones for different age groups. In winter the slope is used for skiing and snowboarding, and in summer the park is used by mountain bikers, runners and Nordic walkers.

The park hosts running, cycling and triathlon competitions and cultural events such as summer open-air cinema.
