Tiele-Winckler Park

Jana Dzierżonia 30, Bytom
About Tiele-Winckler Park

The oldest landscape park in Bytom, by the surviving outbuilding of the Tiele-Winckler palace, with a plane tree that is a natural monument.

The Tiele-Winckler Park, formerly the People's Park (Park Ludowy), lies in Bytom-Miechowice and is the oldest landscape park within the present boundaries of Bytom. It was laid out in the first half of the 19th century as a garden by the Tiele-Winckler palace, and today it is a municipal park of about 14 hectares, entered in the heritage register.

From a palace garden to a park

At first the land was a private garden and was not open to residents. In 1840-1850 it was joined to the neighbouring woodland grove, and around 1850-1860 it was remodelled in the English style to a design by Gustav Stoll and Gustav Meyer. From 1938 the park was managed by the city authorities and became accessible to the public. At its best it covered about 29 hectares; today it has 13.95 ha and a shape close to a rectangle. Of the former elements, such as the driveway from the north, the ponds with islets and the medallion-shaped flower beds, nothing has survived.

The palace that is gone

The Tiele-Winckler palace was looted after 1945, burned and demolished; Polish Army sappers blew it up on 31 December 1954. Only about a tenth of the original building survived, as part of an outbuilding; this fragment has a separate page: Tiele-Winckler Palace in Miechowice. On the site there also stood from the 17th century a chapel of the Holy Cross, demolished in 1853.

Trees

About 53 species of trees and shrubs grow in the park, most of them more than a hundred years old, among them beeches, oaks and maples. Some of the oaks by the roundabout were planted after children were born into the Tiele-Winckler family. The plane tree “Jan III Sobieski” has been a natural monument since 1973. The park underwent a revitalisation completed in 2021, during which a pond and an educational path were created.
