Plac Augusta Hlonda in Katowice

Katowice
About Plac Augusta Hlonda in Katowice

A square in central Katowice with lawns, paths and the Kaskada fountain with two basins.

Plac kardynała Augusta Hlonda (Cardinal August Hlond Square) lies in the centre of Katowice, in the Śródmieście district, between ul. Mikołowska, ul. Henryka Jordana, ul. Głowackiego and ul. J. Poniatowskiego. It is a green square with paths, benches and a fountain.

The Kaskada fountain and the greenery

On the square there are lawns, walking paths and benches, and in the basin stands the Kaskada fountain. It is formed by two overflow basins placed one above the other, with eight nozzles around each, 17 nozzles in all. The jet from the upper basin can rise up to 10 metres above ground level.

The neighbourhood and the trail

To the north the square adjoins the church of Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles, with its main entrance from ul. Mikołowska, and to the east the Maria Konopnicka Secondary School No. 2. Part of the square is crossed by the Parachute Tower Heroes Trail (Szlak Bohaterów Wieży Spadochronowej). Until 1922, and then during the German occupation, the square was called Jahnplatz.

  • Location: Plac Hlonda, Katowice-Śródmieście.
