A monument from 1983 on plac Obrońców Katowic, dedicated to scouts who fought and were murdered during the German occupation.
The Monument to the Scouts of September stands on plac Obrońców Katowic. It commemorates the Silesian scouts who resisted the German soldiers entering Katowice in September 1939, and the scouts who were killed or murdered during the occupation.
It is a bronze group of four young people in scout uniforms on a granite plinth. The first two figures have their hands tied behind their backs. The monument bears the inscription: “Wszystko co nasze Polsce oddamy. Śląsk swoim harcerkom i harcerzom” (“All that is ours we shall give to Poland. Silesia to its girl and boy scouts”), and below it the years 1939-1945.
The sculptor was Zygmunt Brachmański and the architect was Michał Kuczmiński. The monument was unveiled on 4 September 1983. In 2015 it was moved by a few dozen metres in connection with the reconstruction of the market square.
The closest site is the Silesian Theatre, and the Monument to the Silesian Insurgents is not far away either.
