Sopotnia Wielka
About Romanka Nature Reserve

Reserve of 1963 protecting an old upper montane spruce forest in the Żywiec Beskids.

The Romanka Nature Reserve protects a fragment of the old Carpathian Primeval Forest in the Żywiec Beskids. It was established in 1963, and today covers 124.5 hectares around the summit of Romanka, in Jeleśnia municipality.

What the reserve protects

The subject of protection is upper montane spruce forest. Mainly spruces grow here, among them specimens 150-200 years old, and in the lower parts fragments of beech and fir forest. At higher altitudes the trees are stunted, and in the undergrowth there are ferns reaching more than a metre and a half.

Area and location

Originally the reserve covered 98.45 hectares; since 2005 it has covered 124.5 hectares. It lies at an altitude of 1,030 to 1,366 metres above sea level, within the Żywiec Landscape Park.
