About Market Square in Mysłowice

The medieval Market Square of Mysłowice, with the outline of the former town hall in the paving, a fountain and tenement houses from the turn of the 20th century.

The Market Square (Rynek) in Mysłowice is a rectangular square in the town centre, reached by Kacza, Grunwaldzka and Bytomska streets and by Mieroszewskich Square. It came into being at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries as a medieval market place.

History of the square

The first mention of the town dates from 1301. In the middle of the square stood a town hall, which was plundered in 1587 by the troops of Jan Zamoyski. After Mysłowice was incorporated into Prussia in 1742, a new town hall was built in 1787, and the wooden building was pulled down in 1855. Earlier, in 1851-1855, the surface of the square was paved for the first time. The first pharmacy opened here in 1828, and the first cinema, the "Union", in 1907.

The square today

The outline of the former town hall is marked in the paving. In 2004 a fountain with a well and a figure of St John the Baptist was installed. The tenement houses usually have two or three storeys and date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The urban layout was entered in the heritage register in 1972, and the square lies on the red tourist trail.
