A complex of two palaces and an English-style park in Środula, established by the Schön brothers.
The Schön complex in the Środula district of Sosnowiec consists of two palaces, a landscape park and several accompanying buildings, established by the Schön brothers as an industrialists' residence. The whole complex was entered in the heritage register in 1980.
The English-style park was created as a setting for two palaces, those of Ernst and Wilhelm, on Chemiczna Street. It was designed in a layout recalling a pretzel-type garden, with Neo-Romantic walls, artificial ruins and grottoes. A large part of the 19th-century layout has been destroyed, and the pond in the middle of the park was filled in after 1945. Today the park covers about 5.6 hectares.
The park contains about 41 species of trees, including eleven protected as natural monuments, and 15 species of shrubs. Of the former features, a grotto and an oriental pavilion have survived. Besides the palaces, the complex also includes a gardener's house and an outbuilding.
The Palace of Ernst Schön, the main building of the complex, houses the Sosnowiec registry office and is known as the Wedding Palace. Wilhelm's Palace is smaller; its basement houses the rooms of a sports club.
