St Bartholomew's Church in Smolnica

Wiejska 72, Smolnica
About St Bartholomew's Church in Smolnica

A wooden church in a cemetery, on the wooden architecture trail; the present building dates from 1776-1777.

The wooden church of St Bartholomew stands in the parish cemetery in Smolnica, surrounded by a stone wall. At the entrance to the cemetery there is a stone cross from 1882. The church lies on the wooden architecture trail of the Silesian Voivodeship, in the Gliwice loop.

History

The parish was mentioned in 1376 and 1447. Older studies link the building of the church with the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, but dendrochronological research from 2008 points to the years 1776-1777. The tower was made of timber felled in 1571-1572 and may earlier have been a free-standing belfry. After a new church was built nearby in 1979, the old one decayed, and a general renovation began in 2007.

Construction and furnishings

The oriented building is of log construction on a stone foundation, the tower is post-built, and the walls and roofs are covered with shingles. Instead of a chancel there is an apse on three sides. In the sacristy stands a chest from the 17th century. The high altar once held the Smolnica triptych from around 1600, taken after the war to the museum in Racibórz.

Nearby

Nearby stands St James's Church in Sośnicowice.
