St Nicholas' Church in Targoszyce

Kościelna 15, Mierzęcice
About St Nicholas' Church in Targoszyce

A Baroque parish church in Targoszyce (Mierzęcice), built in 1771-1782 of brick, with a Gothic stone portal in the sacristy.

St Nicholas' Church stands in Targoszyce, a part of the village of Mierzęcice in Będzin County. It is a brick Baroque church, single-nave, with one tower at the west. It is entered in the heritage register.

Where the present church came from

The present church was built from 1771 to 1782. A new nave and tower were then added to an older, brick chancel, so the building combines two phases of the parish's history.

What the building looks like

The church is oriented, that is, the chancel lies on the east side. At the west there is a wide porch with a four-sided tower topped with a Baroque helmet roof. A narrow chancel with a straight end wall adjoins the nave.

Interior

The interior is Baroque, with three altars decorated with figures of saints. The only older element is a Gothic stone portal leading to the sacristy.

Nearby

Within a radius of a few kilometres lies Siewierz, with the Church of St John the Baptist. In Wojkowice Kościelne stands the Church of Saints Martin and Dorothy.
