About St Nicholas's Church in Łąka

A wooden parish church from 1660 in Łąka near Pszczyna, with a six-sided ridge turret, on the Wooden Architecture Route.

St Nicholas's Church in Łąka, in the Pszczyna municipality, is a wooden parish church, built in its present form in 1660. It belongs to the Wooden Architecture Route of the Silesian Voivodeship, in its Pszczyna loop, and is listed in the heritage register.

History

The church in Łąka was first mentioned in 1449. In 1570-1628 it belonged to the Protestants, and Catholics regained it in 1639. In 1658 it burned down and two years later it was built anew. Later extensions and alterations largely deprived it of its original, historic character.

Construction

The church is oriented, of log construction, on a high stone base made in 1814 by the mason Weint. The chancel is short, closed on three sides; a sacristy adjoins it on the south and a brick chapel on the north. The nave on a rectangular plan has two projecting porches. The walls are covered with vertical boarding, and a shingle eave protects the base. The nave is strengthened by two pairs of diagonal buttresses. Above the ridge, on the east, stands a six-sided turret with a lantern and a bulbous helmet for the bell. The church has no tower; next to it stands a separate, wooden bell tower.

Inside, the walls are plastered, and the polychrome is more recent. The furnishings are modest, mainly Baroque and late Baroque, and several crosses and liturgical vessels date mostly from the 18th century.

Nearby

It is a few kilometres from here to Pszczyna. There stand, among others, Pszczyna Castle and the Pszczyna Village Farmstead, and near the village lies the Łąka reservoir.
