The largest pond in Świętochłowice after its revitalisation, with walking paths and playgrounds
Kalina Pond in Świętochłowice is the largest body of water in the town. It covers about 5.3 hectares and is up to 3.5 metres deep, and after the revitalisation completed in 2023 it is used for walks and recreation.
The pond was created before the First World War in a subsidence depression left by shallow coal mining. It owes its name to the Kalina colony. In 1928-1939 a recreation centre with a bathing area operated here.
The water was heavily polluted with waste from chemical works, including phenolic compounds. The revitalisation lasted from 2020 to September 2023 and, reduced, according to available data, the pollution by 99 per cent. By the pond, walking paths, playgrounds and sports facilities were created.
By the pond you can see ducks, swans and amphibians, including frogs and tree frogs, especially since 2003.
A kilometre from here is the Museum of the Silesian Uprisings.
