Rybnik
About Szafranek Brothers Monument in Rybnik

A monument from 2018 honouring the brothers, musicians and teachers, founders of the music school in Rybnik.

The Szafranek Brothers Monument has stood in Rybnik since November 2018, in a small square opposite the railway station, at the junction of Józefa Piłsudskiego and Tadeusza Kościuszki streets. It commemorates Karol and Antoni Szafranek, musicians and teachers.

Who the Szafranek brothers were

The brothers founded a private music school in Rybnik in 1933; in 1952 it was nationalised. Antoni taught the violin, Karol the piano. The school was at Piłsudskiego 33, where a court sits today. Today the brothers' name is borne by the State Music School of the 1st and 2nd Degree in Rybnik.

Where the monument came from

The request to commemorate the brothers was made to the mayor of the town by the Szafranek Brothers Music Society in Rybnik, and councillors passed a resolution on the matter in May 2018. The monument was unveiled on 23 November 2018, in the presence of Antoni Szafranek's granddaughter, the brothers' former pupils and representatives of the music school.

Practical information

  • The monument is in a public urban space, by the station, so it can be viewed freely at any time.
  • Not far away, about a kilometre from here, stands the Basilica of St Anthony in Rybnik.
