A complex of four tenement buildings designed by Louis Dame from around 1900, with corner helms, listed in the heritage register.
The complex of four tenement buildings in the block of Moniuszki and Piastowska streets and Korfantego Avenue in Katowice is an example of city-centre development from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It can be recognised by the helms crowning the corners.
The complex was completed around 1900. It was designed by Louis Dame, and its style is described as eclecticism with elements anticipating Art Nouveau. The tenement buildings were put up at the same time as the former Grand Hotel and refer to it architecturally. Two buildings on the Korfantego Avenue side (Moniuszki 2 and Piastowska 1) have six storeys above ground, the other two five.
The whole complex was entered in the heritage register in 1992. The buildings have long served residential and commercial purposes and are still in use, so they can only be viewed from the outside. Before a visit it is worth checking whether the façades are being renovated.
Nearby stand the Silesian Theatre and the Cathedral of Christ the King, so the tenement buildings are easy to combine with a walk around the centre.
