Wełnowiec Park in Katowice

Katowice
About Wełnowiec Park in Katowice

A district park in Katowice on a former spoil heap, with a pump track, playgrounds and a dog run after its revitalisation.

Wełnowiec Park covers 4.18 hectares in the Wełnowiec-Józefowiec district, between Cisowa, Jesionowa and Owocowa streets. It is a green area of district importance, laid out on a wooded former mine spoil heap.

History of the park

The park was laid out in the mid-19th century, and it appears on maps of Katowice from the 1930s. It was given its official name by a resolution of the Katowice City Council of 27 September 2010. Its position on a former spoil heap makes the terrain hilly, and the Upper Silesian Mining History Trail runs through the park.

What is in the park

The park underwent a revitalisation completed in 2024. On the grounds there are playgrounds, a relaxation zone, a pump track, a dog run and a barbecue area. One element of the older layout is an avenue of chestnut trees.

If you are planning to see larger green spaces in Katowice, in the same part of the city there is also Kościuszko Park and the extensive Silesian Park.
