About Bolina Park

A 4.71 ha city park by the Bolina ponds in Katowice, with sports pitches, chess tables and a playground.

Bolina Park is a city park in Katowice with an area of 4.71 ha, located by the Bolina and Bolina II ponds in the Janów-Nikiszowiec district, next to Giszowiec. It has a network of paved paths, sports pitches, a playground and a stage circle.

What is in the park

The park contains a grass football pitch, a concrete multi-purpose court for basketball and volleyball, two ping-pong tables, nine chess tables, a playground, a covered barbecue area and a stage circle. 2,850 trees and shrubs have been planted here, with 55 lamps and 80 benches installed. The "Bolina" restaurant also operates here. The park is also used for city and district events.

Where the centre came from

In the 1950s the Wieczorek mine set up a recreation area for its employees in the Bolina valley. Besides the park there were a campsite, a swimming pool, a canoe marina, a bar, a playground and a bandstand. Over the years part of the facilities were vandalised and the pool was filled in, to which mining damage and the Bolina river, which flooded the area, contributed.

Renewal of the site

In October 2000 an association was formed that wanted to restore the centre's former glory. The mine levelled the ground and prepared a design, and the construction was financed by the city. Work lasted from July 2006 to the end of June 2007. The park as such was established by a resolution of the Katowice City Council of 29 February 2012.

Nearby

The park lies on the border with Nikiszowiec, the estate described as Nikiszowiec. The green cycle route no. 121 links, nearby, the Wilson Shaft Gallery in Janów with Dolinka Murckowska in Murcki.
