Katowice
About Cemetery on Cmentarna Street in Katowice

An active parish cemetery from 1910 in Janów, with a monument to those killed in the Silesian Uprisings from 1928.

The cemetery on Cmentarna Street in Katowice is the Roman Catholic parish cemetery of the parish of St Anne, in the Janów-Nikiszowiec district. It was founded in 1910, together with the establishment of the parish in Janów, and next to the cemetery lies the Janów pond.

The insurgents' monument and destruction

In 1928 a monument to those killed in the Silesian Uprisings was erected in the cemetery. During the Second World War the cemetery was taken over by the authorities and the monument was demolished; after the war it was rebuilt. In 1988 the cemetery was desecrated: 85 graves were damaged, some slabs were moved aside, and crosses were stuck into the ground upside down.

Size and historic elements

In 1936 the cemetery was enlarged to its present size; the parish bought 6,430 square metres of land for the new part from the Giesche mine. The cemetery covers 2.2575 hectares. On the grounds stands a cross with a figure from the mid-19th century.
