A square in the centre of Sosnowiec by the railway station, known as the Patelnia, with a monument to Jan Kiepura.
Centenary Square (Plac Stulecia), colloquially the Patelnia ("Frying Pan"), is a square in the centre of Sosnowiec, in the Śródmieście district, at the junction of Modrzejowska, Warszawska and 3 Maja streets. It lies right next to Sosnowiec Główny station.
An underground shopping arcade links it with the station and the area of Kilińskiego Street, and there is a stairway down to it within the square. In the neighbourhood stand the historic railway station and the monument to Jan Kiepura, unveiled in 2002 during the celebrations of the centenary of the singer's birth.
In the 1970s, after the transport junction was rebuilt, an unnamed small square came into being around the intersection of the main pedestrian routes. Residents began to call it the Patelnia, because the paving slabs became very hot on sweltering days. On the occasion of the centenary of Sosnowiec receiving its town charter, the official name was chosen in a poll among residents, and the City Council gave the square the name Plac Stulecia. In the 1990s the place served mainly as a space for transit and small-scale trading.
Half a kilometre from the square stands the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and a kilometre further on, Dietel Park.
