A student mountain hut in a timber highlander cottage on the Zapolanka ridge in the Żywiec Beskids, run by guides from Katowice.
Chata na Zagroniu is a student hut in the Żywiec Beskids, within the Żywiec-Orava Beskids. It lies on a ridge below Zapolanka, between Rajcza-Nickulina and Złatna, about 200 metres from the yellow trail. Administratively it belongs to the hamlet of Zagroń (often marked on maps as Kręcichwosty), part of the village of Złatna in Ujsoły municipality.
The hut occupies a timber highlander cottage more than a hundred years old. At first it operated, among other things, as a gallery of folk art and a venue for workshops in folklore education, and in time it also took on the role of overnight accommodation.
Since October 2011 it has been looked after by the Student Circle of Beskid Guides in Katowice. According to the hut's website, the building is owned by the Inter-University Branch of the PTTK in Katowice and is managed by the Hut Council.
The hut has 35 beds in basic tourist conditions, as well as space for pitching your own tent. Guests have the use of an equipped kitchen and a lounge with a fireplace, a washroom in the utility room, a fire pit in front of the hut and, in summer, an outdoor shower. The hut has electricity and running water, and the toilets are outside. Guests get boiling water or tea free of charge, and in the evenings they can take out board games.
The hut offers no catering, as guests use the kitchen themselves. A complete ban on excessive drinking applies in the hut and its immediate surroundings, and the website asks guests to bring indoor shoes.
In the summer season, from July to September, the hut operates according to a calendar of hut stays, that is, duty periods with staff on site. Outside the season it is available on selected weekends shown in the calendar and only by prior booking. Booking also applies to stays without staff on duty, usually for larger groups.
A waymarked trail runs nearby from Rajcza through Nickulina and Zagroń to Redykalny Wierch, the mountain hut on Hala Lipowska and Hala Rysianka, and on to Romanka. A second section links Ujsoły with Zagroń and leads to the yellow trail. The hut's website suggests trips to Redykalny Wierch, Hala Rysianka and Hala Boracza, as well as more distant goals: Romanka, Pilsko, Rycerzowa, Krawców Wierch and Muńcuł.
On the route are the PTTK mountain hut on Hala Lipowska and the PTTK mountain hut on Hala Rysianka, and towards Boracza the PTTK mountain hut on Hala Boracza.
