A reinforced concrete church in Szopienice-Burowiec, built in 1981-1983, with a foundation stone blessed by John Paul II.
The Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help stands on ulica Siewna in the Katowice district of Szopienice-Burowiec. It is a single-nave reinforced concrete church with one tower, built in 1981-1983 and consecrated in 1987. Its origins are linked to the Pope's visit in 1979.
Efforts to obtain a church began in 1939, and the land was bought on 11 September 1957. The foundation stone was blessed on 6 June 1979 by Pope John Paul II during his first pilgrimage to Poland. Construction began on 4 May 1981, the shell was completed on 18 September 1983, and the consecration took place on 28 June 1987.
The design was made by the engineer Jan Głuch, and from 2002 the interior was arranged by Krzysztof Gorgoń. The church covers 874 sq m and has two storeys, with Caritas rooms on the lower one. The interior is modest, in white and grey. There is one altar, a gift from the parish of St Joseph the Worker in Józefowiec, and a copy of the painting of Our Lady of Perpetual Help by Halina Gadomska. Three bells hang in the tower.
From Szopienice it is close to the Rolling Mill, or Museum of Zinc Metallurgy (about 800 m), and a little further is Nikiszowiec.
