About Church of St John the Baptist in Brenna

A Baroque brick church from 1793-1796 with paintings by the Cieszyn painter Stanisław Jastrzembski.

A Baroque brick church in Brenna, blessed on 21 August 1796 and entered in the heritage register. It has a single nave and a single tower, and in the high altar hangs an 18th-century painting by a Cieszyn painter.

Construction

Permission to build was issued in 1792, in the reign of Emperor Francis II of Habsburg. Work continued in 1793-1796, and the church was blessed on 21 August 1796. The church was later renovated many times. It was built of brick in the Baroque style.

Furnishings

The interior holds three altars. The main one is decorated with a painting of the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan, painted in the 18th century by Stanisław Jastrzembski of Cieszyn. The same artist created the paintings of the Holy Family, Our Lady of the Scapular and St John Sarkander, and the Stations of the Cross. The figures of St Joseph and St Anne were made at the end of the 19th century, and most of the furnishings date from that century. Since 1897 the church has had an organ by the firm of Rieger of Krnov, with eleven stops, one manual and a pedal.

Nearby

Brenna lies at the foot of the Silesian Beskids. Nearby are the Lookout Tower on Stary Groń and the PTTK mountain hut on Błatnia, and further on Klimczok.
