About Evangelical Cemetery “Na Groniczku” in Wisła

Lutheran parish cemetery in Wisła founded in 1819, with a chapel from 1948 and the graves of residents who served the town.

The Evangelical cemetery “Na Groniczku” in Wisła, at Groniczek 4, belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran parish. It was consecrated on 21 November 1819, and a week later the first person, Paweł Cieślar, was buried in it.

Beginnings and extension

The first consecration was carried out by Pastor Michał Kupferschmid. After the intervention of a Roman Catholic priest the cemetery was closed, and in January 1820 it was reopened. At first it covered about 3,000 square metres on land belonging to the farmer Pilch. It was enlarged in 1869, 1872, 1902 and 1949 and in the 1970s.

What survives from earlier years

The wall was built in 1852, and in 1888 thuja trees were planted along the main avenue. The oldest stone gravestone is the grave of Pastor Kupferschmid from 1867. Wooden crosses were in time replaced with metal ones, the oldest of which dates from 1876. Construction of the cemetery chapel began in 1947, and it was consecrated on 29 August 1948.

Buried here are residents of Wisła who served the town: bishops, teachers, artists and cultural activists who helped shape the history of the locality.
