Evangelical Church in Pszczyna

Rynek 1, Pszczyna
About Evangelical Church in Pszczyna

A Lutheran church by the Pszczyna Market Square, built in 1743-1746 and rebuilt in a neo-Baroque form after the fire of 1905.

The Evangelical church on the Market Square (Rynek) in Pszczyna is the church of the Evangelical-Augsburg (Lutheran) parish, whose façade faces the main square of the town. The present neo-Baroque building was created after the fire of 1905, and the history of the building goes back to the mid-18th century.

From Promnitz's foundation to rebuilding after the fire

Efforts to obtain an Evangelical church in Pszczyna began in 1709. The church was built in 1743-1746, funded by Erdmann Promnitz to a design by the court architect Christian Jahne, and consecrated in 1746. In 1860 the tower was heightened, in 1896 a new organ was funded, and in 1905 a fire destroyed the building. The rebuilding of 1905-1907 was led by the architect Scheinnert, who later rebuilt Książ Castle. The result was a neo-Baroque building with the largest hall in the town.

Façade and interior

On the Market Square side the entrance is accented by an imposing portal with two Ionic columns, and two corner projections hide copper helms. The tower on the north-west side has a larger copper helm, and the roof is mansard. On the outer wall is set the stone tombstone of the nobleman Zawadzki of Polanka, who died in 1716. In the interior run wooden galleries, characteristic of Evangelical churches. The altar with the painting “Ascension of Jesus” was donated by Duchess Augusta of Anhalt-Köthen, and opposite the pulpit is a princely box with the Hochberg coat of arms.

By the Market Square

In the immediate vicinity stand Pszczyna Castle and the town hall, and further on the Museum of the Silesian Press and the Pszczyna Village Farmstead.
