A municipal square in Giszowiec named after the painter Ewald Gawlik, laid out in 2017 with benches and a small playground.
Ewald Gawlik Square (Skwer Ewalda Gawlika) is a small square in the Giszowiec district of Katowice, at the junction of Wojciecha and Barbórki streets. It lies south of the complex of buildings of the old school. It comprises two plots owned by the city.
The square bears the name of Ewald Gawlik, a non-professional painter associated with Giszowiec and a member of the Janów Group. The name was proposed by the Council of Auxiliary Unit no. 17 Giszowiec in January 2016, and was given by a resolution of the Katowice City Council on 26 October 2016.
The revitalisation of the square was submitted to the Katowice participatory budget as the project “Przyjemniej na Giszowcu” (More Pleasant in Giszowiec) and approved for implementation in September 2015. The revitalised square was opened in June 2017. Pavements, paths and topsoiling were done at that time, and new street furniture was installed.
The square has benches, litter bins and bicycle stands, two spring riders for children and sixteen lamp posts. The paths are paved with cobblestones, with green areas left between them. It is a quiet stop on a walk around Giszowiec; in the area you can also see Nikiszowiec, and a little further away lies the Katowice Forest Park.
