About Frog Fountain in Katowice

A brass sculpture of a frog from 1980 by Joanna Ambroziak-Hanasiewicz, spouting water on the pedestrian street of Stawowa.

The Frog Fountain (Fontanna Żaba) stands on Stawowa Street in Katowice, at the junction with 3 Maja Street, at number 13. It was built in 1980, when Stawowa was being turned into a pedestrian street. The author is Joanna Ambroziak-Hanasiewicz.

What the fountain looks like

The brass sculpture of a frog weighs more than 100 kilograms and sits on a granite boulder. Water flows from its mouth into a basin lined with greenish African granite. The frog refers to the former pond that lay at the end of Stawowa Street.

The fate of the sculpture

The fountain underwent a thorough renovation in 1998. In 2002 vandals removed the frog from its pedestal, but City Guard officers recovered it. The sculpture returned to its place in July 2003, and the fountain was then given lighting. At one point the basin was converted into a flower bed.

Practical information

  • Address: Stawowa 13, Katowice, Śródmieście.
  • The fountain is easy to combine with a walk to the Stanisław Wyspiański Silesian Theatre, about 300 metres away.
  • The state of the water and lighting depends on the season, so it is worth checking on the spot.
