A square in the centre of Rybnik, a former marketplace, rebuilt in 2006-2007 with fountains and greenery.
Freedom Square (Plac Wolności) in Rybnik lies in the town centre, east of the Market Square, and is one of the main public spaces of the city centre. Łony and 3 Maja streets lead off it.
As early as the first half of the 13th century there was a marketplace on this site. Until 1922 it bore the German name Neuer Ring, that is, New Market Square. At the beginning of the 20th century a monument stood here. After the war a development concept was drawn up by an architect from Inwestprojekt in Katowice, and the technical and economic assumptions were approved in 1986.
In 2006-2007, during the construction of the Focus Park shopping centre, the square was thoroughly rebuilt. The former bus station was turned into a space with fountains, benches and greenery, and three bus stops were left in the northern part. The building of the City Information Office, modelled on a pre-war building, was also rebuilt. The design by the toprojekt studio won the award for the best public space in the Silesian Voivodeship in 2010.
Around the square stand townhouses and the Teatr Ziemi Rybnickiej theatre, and a few hundred metres away is the Rybnik Museum.
