Jan Kasprowicz Square in Katowice

Katowice
About Jan Kasprowicz Square in Katowice

The former Murcki market square with modernist buildings from the early 20th century and a figure of St Barbara.

A square in the Katowice district of Murcki, where Wolności, Baczyńskiego, Mruczka and Wojtalewicza streets meet. It used to be the Murcki market square.

Where the name comes from and how it changed

Before the First World War the square bore the German name Marktplatz. Until 1975 it served as a marketplace, and after that date it was called 1 May Square (Plac 1 Maja) before receiving the name of Jan Kasprowicz. In 2003 the square was renovated: new benches, paving stones and a children's playground appeared.

Buildings

The square is surrounded by four modernist residential buildings from the early 20th century. The house at number 4 is a former department store, built in 1905-1910. On the square stands a figure of St Barbara, and the nearby buildings house, among others, the Murcki district office. The whole Murcki settlement, together with the square, was entered in the heritage register in 2021. Not far away lies Murcki Park.
