a municipal cultural institution on Sejm of Silesia Square, organiser of music and visual arts festivals
Katowice City of Gardens (Katowice Miasto Ogrodów) is a municipal cultural institution based at plac Sejmu Śląskiego 2 in Katowice. It organises events in music, film, design, visual arts, education, ecology, theatre and sport.
It began with the ECOC Office, set up in the Katowice Culture Centre during the city’s bid for the title of European Capital of Culture. From 5 September 2011 it operated as an independent institution. The Krystyna Bochenek Katowice Culture Centre (a merger of the Upper Silesian Culture Centre and the Silesian Variety Agency, from 2010) was incorporated into it on 1 February 2016, and on 1 February 2020 the Silesia Music Promotion and Popularisation Institution joined. On 11 December 2015 Katowice received the title of UNESCO Creative City of Music.
Its projects include the Katowice Street Art Festival, Katowice JazzArt Festival, Ars Independent Festival, Silesian Jazz Festival, Medialab Katowice and the Micro-grants programme. Plac Sejmu Śląskiego lies close to the Cathedral of Christ the King, the Silesian Theatre and the Katowice History Museum.
