The central square of Wodzisław Śląski with 19th-century townhouses, a fountain and a small park in the northern part.
The Market Square (Rynek) in Wodzisław Śląski is the central square of the town, which sources count among the largest market squares in Silesia. It is surrounded by townhouses, and above the northern frontage, on a hill, stands the historic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The southern part of the square is paved with slabs, and the northern part is a small park with benches, shrubs and trees around a fountain. Many townhouses from the 19th century have survived.
In the Middle Ages the square held a town hall, a pillory and a deep well. Today historic streets run around the square: Kubsza, Zgody, Powstańców Śląskich, Minorytów, Piłsudskiego and Wałowa.
The frontages vary in character, because after the Second World War ruins were found in the northern part of the square. Townhouses numbered 16 to 24 were therefore built after the war, and several houses on the western side were rebuilt only in part.
The layout of the old houses is better seen from the south and east. Townhouses numbers 2, 3, 7 and 8 date from the 19th century and have kept their original character, and numbers 3, 10 and 26 are entered in the heritage register. On the corner of townhouse number 9 there is a bas-relief of the Unknown Insurgent, and in a niche of townhouse number 13 a sculpture of Duchess Constance of Wodzisław. Townhouse number 20 houses an art gallery and the seat of the Society of Friends of the Wodzisław Land.
By the square, a short walk away, is the Dietrichstein Palace. By the square there are also the former Franciscan monastery, the former synagogue, Wodzisław Castle and the monument to the Silesian insurgents.
The square hosts city events, including Wodzisław Śląski Days, the Easter fair, the Franciscan Fair and the Christmas fair.
